Saxzi Sun won two categories at the Gin Guide Awards: Martini and Negroni. In the same awards, Saxzi One was Highly Commended in the Martini category, and Saxzi Sun was named Best in Greece, the highest-scoring Greek gin.
What was judged, and how
The cocktail categories are not judged on the gin alone. Entries are served as finished drinks, mixed to a fixed recipe so every gin meets the judges on the same terms, and tasted blind.
Martinis are built at six parts gin to one part Dolin vermouth. Negronis are equal parts gin, Campari and Antica Formula. Nobody adjusts a ratio to flatter a bottle. What the panel tastes is how the gin behaves when it stops being the whole drink and becomes one third of one.
That is a useful thing to win, because it is the question a bar actually asks. A gin can be beautiful neat and disappear the moment it meets vermouth.
Best in Greece
The geographic awards go to the highest-scoring gin from each country across the whole competition, not to a separate Greek category. Saxzi Sun holds that place for Greece.
The two bottles
Saxzi Sun is a Mediterranean dry gin at 43%. It is the one that won both cocktail categories, and it is built for the long, warm end of the range.
Saxzi One is a Mediterranean dry gin at 41%, distilled to London Dry standards with a single-shot method: salt, and botanicals that taste like this coastline. It took the Highly Commended place in the Martini category.
